Interest meeting 8pm Wednesday, September 18th in Diana 401

JAC is the first undergraduate journal in print devoted to art criticism. We publish critical writing and art made by undergraduate students internationally in an annual edition that is stocked at McNally Jackson, Printed Matter, Perrotin Bookstore, and others, and collected by the MoMA library. As a member of the editorial team, you will work with a group of sincerely engaged and sincerely fun people interested in art and criticism to produce the journal. JAC board members have the unique ability to publish their written work on our website. You will also gain access to frequent lectures and workshops with JAC alumni and other exciting young people working in the art, art history, curatorial, and publishing industries.

We are currently looking for the following positions to be filled:

  1. Editor: reviews and edits text submissions for the journal to maintain high standards of style, grammar, clarity, and strength of argument.

  2. Copy Editor: edits the final round of revised texts for grammar and consistency with the JAC style guide. Copy Editors frequently act as Editors in addition to their copy role.

  3. (Web) Designer: leads the charge on the revamping of the JAC website, with free reign to design an entirely new layout if they please or work to update and add to our current site. This person will also work with our greater design team on the print edition.

  4. Sales Director: liaises with our printers and with bookstores about stocking JAC, gets copies to where they need to be, coordinates library subscriptions, and promotes general journal sales.

  5. Funding Outreach and Events Director: organizes grant applications and donations to fund projects and events.

All of these positions share the abilities to: choose our theme, workshop the call for submissions, choose which submissions we want to feature in print, publish their original written work on our website, access the JAC alumni and speakers for job opportunities or advice, and be a part of our 10th year.

To apply, please format your email subject:
[position] application, [full name] (eg. Web Designer application, Joe Shmoe).

Include in your email your school and year and attach all required materials (specified below) in PDF or Word format. Please indicate if you are studying abroad in the 2024-25 academic year or have unconfirmed plans to do so. Let us know which nights of the week work best for your schedule this semester—our weekly meetings are from 8pm-10pm.

The journal is published once a year. Positions must be held for both fall and spring semesters of this academic year. Workload outside of meetings will vary but be heaviest in the spring once we receive submissions.

*For positions that require you to edit the sample essay, please download and edit the essay using Track Changes, and attach your edited copy as a .docx when you submit your application.

*For any position, feel free to include a brief paragraph or two about any contemporary art or design practices, topics, or themes that you either really love or really hate (required for Editor applications).

REQUIRED MATERIALS TO APPLY TO JAC:

Most members of the editorial board are Editors, who work on one or two essays for our print edition. The editing process happens in multiple stages, with the ability for the writer to respond to edits as the essay is honed collaboratively. Editors are also invited to publish their written work via the JAC website throughout the academic year. If you are interested in applying to be an Editor, please send the following to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com:

  • In around 500 words, tell us about your experience in art/art history and editing/writing/publishing and describe any contemporary art practices, topics, or themes that you either really love or really hate
  • 1-2 writing samples of any length, preferably related to art, music, or film (if either is longer than 5 pages, please provide excerpts)
  • Your edited version of the linked essay HERE
  • Ideas for how to increase the journal's reach for the call for submissions

We are looking for a new Copy Editor, whose role consists of editing the final round of revised texts for grammar and consistency with the JAC style guide. This workload is fairly concentrated near the end of the spring semester, immediately before the journal goes to print. It is possible to be both an Editor and a Copy Editor, so please mention if you’re interested in both. Please send the following to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com:

  • A brief description of your relevant experiences
  • 1-2 writing samples of any length, preferably related to art, music, or film (if longer than 5 pages, please provide excerpts)
  • Your copyedited version of the linked essay HERE

We are also in need of a Web Designer for journalofartcriticism.com who will also work with our print designers. Our site is hosted on Cargo Collective. Experience with code and InDesign is preferred but not required. A strong attention to detail and interesting design ideas are very important. Please send the following to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com:

  • Brief information about your experience (coding languages, web platforms, previous design work, design that you consume/love/makes you inspired, etc)
  • A link for up to 5 websites/online journals whose design elements align with your vision for the journal
  • Spend a bit of time with our website and provide 2-3 ideas for how it could be improved and added to
  • Your design portfolio or links/images of any past (web) design work (not required)

JAC is looking for a Sales Director, whose primary role will be to coordinate with our printer, oversee the proofing process, and liaise with bookstores and museums, while promoting general journal sales. This is an invaluable role. Charisma and the ability to keep tabs and follow-up are important skills. Please send the following to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com:

  • A description of your relevant experience/qualifications
  • 2-3 ideas for expanding JAC’s reach in terms of distribution and readership

Finally, JAC is looking for a Funding Outreach and Events Director, who would work on grant writing and other funding outreach projects to help us do all of the fun things we want to do. Our 10th anniversary is a big year and this director would help us celebrate accordingly. Please send the following to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com:

  • A description of any relevant experience/qualifications
  • 2-3 ideas for either a 10-year anniversary event or a launch event for our print journal

If you'd like to be involved in a capacity not listed here, please send an email to journalofartcriticism@gmail.com stating your vision for your role in the publication, along with any relevant experiences. Also send us an email if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!
